From young adult horror author Darren Shan, comes the wonderfully dark and tense story, The Thing Executioner.Meet Jebel, the executioner's son. He's scrawny, has barely any strength, and is considered a mockery. A weak son of an executioner? Hard to believe. But then, a quest arises, that allows Jebel the possibility to become the man he's always wanted to be.When this first came out, I was really excited to read it. The moment my library got a copy, I got it out before anyone else could. The Thin Executioner was a decent book. I'd give it 3.5 stars. As a Darren Shan fanatic, i had high expectations for this book. i expected a twisted, complicated plot with sinister details and gruesome imagery that would make Steven Spielberg shiver. However, it wasn't that fulfilling at all. Pro's:1. the huge array of characters that the two protagonists meets. They were all interesting and had different personalities (some were freaking cannibals, some were people who hurt themselves to repent
This book was absolutely thrilling! Many people that have also read this book are saying things like it didn't live up to the standards of Shan's other books, or that there weren't any twists in the plot, but that's what made this book even better! People are missing the meaning of this book! Yes, it was a fantasy. A nice one at that, there were plenty of gorey details; executions, whippings, slaves, etc. But the best part of the book was that this spoiled brat, Jebel Rum, became a hero. Not

Darren Shan is a Master Storyteller! This book tells the story of Jebel Rum. He is the runt of the litter and feels it. When his father publicly overlooks him, as a possible candidate to replace him as Town Executioner (a very highly prized and esteemed job), he rashly decides the only path for redemption is to go on a Quest. We then set off with this arrogant, selfish & unworldly boy and his newly acquired slave Tel Hesani on the most dangerous and brutal journey. You've got to read it to
For my first Darren Shan book, my experience was one mixed with highs and lows. Initially the story took a while to get me interested as it lacks detail and any meaningful relationships between the characters from the offset. As Jebel Rum's journey got going I was intrigued to see where it would go as there was lots of room for creativity along the way. The many populations of people scattered across their path made for an interesting read as they all held differing customs and beliefs which
Me1: Why did you buy this?Me2: I have no idea. But it was $2 at the Borders sale.Me1: Why did you read it?Me2: Well, I didn't want to waste $2.Me1: Did it have any redeeming qualities?Me2: Not really.Me1: I ask me, what is one of the many signs that you were dealing with a subpar, insincere effort?Me2: In a book filled with gratuitous violence, the main character says something like "You can't do spit about it." No one in the book uses language heavier than "damn." This is a "pre-edited for TV"
I didn't finish because the main chara was a complete asshole and I just couldn't. I really want to finish it and maybe discover that he changes, but not right now.
